2025/08/07 - 2025/08/09

Every August, the city of Bristol transforms into a giant work of art as colourful hot air balloons fill the sky. The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, one of Europe’s largest balloon festivals, takes place at Ashton Court Estate and draws over 500,000 visitors across four days-a true highlight of the British summer. More than 100 balloons ascend together in breathtaking displays, and a packed schedule of family-friendly events ensures there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast, a family with children, or simply seeking an extraordinary experience, this is a festival that will set your heart soaring.

From the magical dawn mass ascents to the glowing spectacle of Nightglow, the Fiesta is a feast for all five senses. Hear the roar of burners, breathe in the scent of grass and street food, watch clusters of balloons drift above the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and feel the thrill of looking up at a sky alive with colour. Bristol’s Balloon Fiesta is a celebration of adventure, community, and the simple joy of gazing upward.

Main Attractions

Mass Ascents: Spectacular Shows at Dawn and Dusk

The heart of the Fiesta is the twice-daily mass ascents, when more than 100 hot air balloons inflate and rise together at sunrise and sunset. The sight is breathtaking: classic teardrop-shaped balloons float alongside special shapes-animals, cars, cartoon characters. The sound of burners, the cheers of the crowd, and the vivid colours drifting across the sky create a moment of pure wonder for all who witness it.

Nightglow and Firework Finale

After sunset, dozens of balloons remain tethered on the ground and light up in time to music for the famous Nightglow. The balloons glow like lanterns, pulsing and flickering with the rhythm, and the night ends with a spectacular fireworks show. Families picnic on the grass, the air is sweet with festival treats, and the whole site buzzes with excitement-Nightglow is the highlight of the Fiesta for many.

On-the-Ground Fun: Music, Stunts, and Family Activities

The Fiesta arena is lively even between balloon launches. Enjoy live bands, marching bands, stunt shows, model balloon competitions, and ballooning workshops. There are fairground rides and face painting for children, and opportunities to meet balloon pilots. Adults can sample local bagels, curries, ice cream, and coffee from more than 100 food stalls. The relaxed atmosphere invites everyone to lounge on the grass with friends and family, soaking up the summer vibes.

Cultural and Historical Background

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta began in 1979, rooted in Bristol’s long history with ballooning. The city’s connection to hot air balloons dates back to 1784, when Michael Biaggini staged Britain’s first public balloon flight at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre (then Cooper’s Hall). In the 1960s, aeronautical engineer Don Cameron moved to Bristol and, with friends, built Western Europe’s first modern hot air balloon, the Bristol Belle, which flew in 1967. Cameron went on to found Cameron Balloons, now one of the world’s leading balloon manufacturers, making Bristol a global centre for balloon innovation and craftsmanship.

In 1979, inspired by a pub conversation, Don Cameron and fellow balloon enthusiasts launched the first Fiesta at Ashton Court Estate. That inaugural event saw 27 balloons from the UK and Europe take part. Each year, the Fiesta has grown, now featuring over 100 balloons in mass ascents and becoming a symbol of Bristol itself-especially the iconic view of balloons over the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The event is non-profit, supported by local sponsors and volunteers, and remains a beloved tradition for the city.

Bristol’s balloon culture is embodied by Cameron Balloons, university balloon societies, and the Fiesta itself, all reflecting the city’s creative spirit and community pride. For locals, it’s a symbol of “Bristolness”; for visitors, it’s a chance to feel the warmth and unity of the city. Balloon lovers and families from around the world gather to share in the joy of looking up at the sky-a true “festival of the skies.”

Participant Voices

“Watching the mass ascent at sunrise was pure magic. The field was misty, everyone wrapped in blankets with coffee in hand, and suddenly the sky filled with colour. My children were speechless, staring up in awe.”

Fun Facts

  • Special-shaped balloons have included everything from Darth Vader to a flying house and a giant birthday cake.
