Jinju Namgang Yudeung (Lantern) Festival
A River of Light, Memory, and Community
2025/10/03 - 2025/10/18
Every autumn, the city of Jinju in southern Korea transforms into a glowing wonderland with the Jinju Namgang Yudeung (Lantern) Festival. For two weeks, the Namgang River becomes a living canvas, illuminated by tens of thousands of floating and hanging lanterns that tell stories of history, hope, and dreams. Whether you’re a photographer, a family, or a romantic soul, this festival promises an unforgettable sensory journey through light, tradition, and the warmth of Korean hospitality.
As dusk falls, the sight of lanterns drifting on the water, the sound of music and laughter, and the scent of autumn air mixed with festival treats fill the city. Jinju’s ancient fortress and bridges glow against the night sky, inviting visitors to stroll, reflect, and make wishes beneath a canopy of shimmering lights.
Main Attractions
Namgang River Lantern Display
The festival’s centerpiece is the breathtaking display of lanterns floating on the Namgang River. Lanterns take the shape of dragons, tigers, boats, and mythical figures, each one meticulously crafted and glowing with vibrant colors. Walking along the riverside, visitors are enveloped in a magical world where light dances on water and reflections seem to stretch forever.
Wishing Lanterns and Lantern Launches
One of the most beloved traditions is writing wishes or messages on paper lanterns and releasing them onto the river. As hundreds of lanterns drift away, carrying hopes and prayers, the collective sense of connection and serenity is palpable. Lantern launches are often accompanied by music, fireworks, and moments of quiet reflection.
Traditional Food and Drink
Street vendors offer Jinju’s specialties: beef soup (Jinju yukgaejang), savory pancakes (jeon), sweet rice cakes, and hotteok (sweet pancakes). The aroma of roasting chestnuts, the taste of spicy tteokbokki, and the warmth of makgeolli (rice wine) invite visitors to savor the flavors of autumn in Korea.
Cultural and Historical Background
The Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival traces its origins back over 400 years to the Imjin War, specifically the Siege of Jinju in 1592. During this critical battle, Korean defenders at Jinjuseong Fortress floated oil lanterns (yudeung) on the Namgang River as a strategic measure to prevent Japanese forces from crossing the water. These lanterns also served as a means of communication-sending military signals and messages to families outside the fortress, and honoring those who lost their lives in the conflict. The light of the lanterns became not only a military tool but also a symbol of prayer and comfort for families and the local community.
After the war, the tradition of floating lanterns continued as a way for Jinju’s citizens to remember the sacrifices of the past, pray for peace, and connect the community through shared memory and hope. Over the centuries, the practice evolved from a wartime necessity into a cherished local custom, and eventually into a large-scale public festival. Today, the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival is not only a commemoration of the city’s resilience and history but also a vibrant celebration that welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds. The festival honors ancestors, strengthens local bonds, and invites visitors to experience the living tradition and collective warmth of Jinju.
Since being officially named in 2000, the festival has grown into one of Korea’s premier cultural events, attracting over a million visitors annually and even inspiring similar lantern festivals worldwide. The illuminated Namgang River and Jinjuseong Fortress serve as powerful symbols of remembrance, unity, and the enduring light of hope in Korean culture.
Participant Voices
