Winterlude
A Wonderland of Ice, Light, and Smiles in Canada’s Capital Region
2025/01/30 - 2025/02/16
Every February, the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau transform into a sparkling winter playground for “Winterlude.” Over three weekends, this iconic Canadian festival draws families, friends, and visitors from around the world to skate, play in the snow, marvel at ice art, and fully embrace the magic of winter. Whether you’re a snow lover or a first-timer, Winterlude offers outdoor adventure, cultural experiences, and genuine smiles that will warm your heart.
Glide along the world’s largest skating rink, wander through forests of glittering ice sculptures, and share a laugh with the legendary Ice Hog mascots. With programs celebrating Canadian diversity, Indigenous culture, and the beauty of winter itself, Winterlude invites everyone to rediscover the joy of the coldest season.
Main Attractions
Rideau Canal Skateway: The World’s Largest Natural Skating Rink
The heart of Winterlude is the Rideau Canal Skateway, stretching 7.8 km through downtown Ottawa as one of the world’s largest natural skating rinks. Skating past snow-dusted trees and historic buildings is a truly special experience. Along the way, stop at cozy huts for hot chocolate or the sweet, cinnamon aroma of BeaverTails (fried dough pastries). The sound of skates on ice, children’s laughter, and the crisp winter air create unforgettable memories.
Snowflake Kingdom: The Ultimate Snow Playground
Spread across Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau, Snowflake Kingdom is a snowy amusement park for kids and adults alike. Giant snow slides, snow sculptures, tubing, and interactive games fill the park, while the Ice Hog mascot family roams for hugs and photos. Zip lines, snow mazes, live performances, and the scent of maple treats and hot snacks fill the air with winter excitement.
Ice Sculpture Contests & Crystal Garden
On Sparks Street and in Confederation Park, sculptors from around the world transform blocks of ice into magical works of art. The National Ice-Carving Championship and international competitions are a highlight, and at night, illuminated ice sculptures turn the park into a crystalline wonderland. Interactive ice lounges and photo spots are also popular with visitors.
Festive Costumes, Decorations, and Mascots
Winterlude’s beloved Ice Hog family mascots appear in fluffy costumes, delighting children and festival-goers. Staff and volunteers dress in colorful winter gear, while the venues are decorated with sparkling lights, snowflake banners, and whimsical snow art, creating a warm and playful atmosphere even on the coldest days.
Traditional Food and Winter Treats
Winter classics abound: BeaverTails (fried dough), maple taffy made on snow, poutine, pulled pork sandwiches, and hot chocolate. The aroma of sweet pastries, roasting meats, and coffee drifts from food stalls along the canal and throughout the festival grounds.
Cultural and Historical Background
Winterlude was established in 1979 by the National Capital Commission to celebrate Canada’s northern climate and the beauty of winter. The goal was to turn the cold season into a time of joy and bring communities together. What started as a one-day event has grown into a three-week festival attracting over 600,000 visitors, with a record 1.6 million visits in 2007. It’s now one of Canada’s premier winter events, celebrating national traditions and diversity.
In recent years, Winterlude has added Indigenous programming, LGBTQ2+ Winter Pride, and international ice sculpture competitions, reflecting the resilience, creativity, and spirit of Canadians who embrace winter. The festival boosts tourism and community spirit in Ottawa-Gatineau, and is a cherished winter tradition for locals and visitors alike.
