Folklorama
Two Weeks of Traveling the World in Winnipeg
2026/08/01 - 2026/08/14
Every August, the city of Winnipeg is transformed into a vibrant celebration of global cultures for Folklorama. Over two weeks, more than 40 country- and culture-themed pavilions pop up across the city, offering visitors a chance to “travel the world” through music, dance, traditional costumes, and authentic cuisine. Whether you’re a foodie, a family, or someone seeking new cultural experiences, this festival lets you embark on a global adventure without ever leaving Manitoba.
The scent of freshly grilled shawarma, the sweetness of baklava, the melodies of Irish jigs, and the pulse of African drums-Folklorama is a feast for the senses. Each year, more than 425,000 pavilion visits are recorded, making everyone a part of Winnipeg’s living multicultural mosaic.
Main Attractions
Global Pavilions: A Journey of Song, Dance, and Flavour
The heart of Folklorama is its network of over 40 pavilions scattered throughout Winnipeg. Half open during the first week, the other half during the second. Each pavilion immerses you in a specific country or culture, with traditional and contemporary music, dance, and sometimes guest performances from around the world.
Inside, you’ll find volunteers and staff in national dress, cultural art and artifacts, laughter, applause, and live music. Many pavilions offer hands-on experiences like henna tattoos, steelpan workshops, and late-night parties, making it easy for visitors and performers to connect and share in the celebration.
Authentic Food & Drink: Eat Your Way Around the World
Food is at the heart of Folklorama. Sample Egyptian falafel and shawarma, Ukrainian perogies and borscht, Filipino adobo and lumpia, German schnitzel, Indian samosas, and more. Desserts range from baklava and kunafa to mango pudding and Canadian maple treats. Many pavilions serve imported beer, wine, and spirits, so every meal feels like a trip abroad.
Chefs and volunteers prepare hundreds or even thousands of servings a day, filling the air with the aromas of spices, baked goods, and grilled meats. Discovering new flavors-or rediscovering the tastes of home-is one of the festival’s greatest joys.
Costumes, Decorations, and the Folklorama Llama
Each pavilion dazzles with national costumes, flags, folk art, and themed decorations. Volunteers and performers in saris, kilts, kimonos, dashikis, and more welcome guests with warmth and pride. The official mascot, the Folklorama Llama, makes appearances for photos and to liven up events.
Cultural and Historical Background
Folklorama began in 1970 as a one-time event to celebrate Manitoba’s centennial, but its huge success made it an annual tradition. The first festival featured 21 cultures and drew 50,000 people; today, Folklorama spans two weeks, with more than 40 pavilions and hundreds of thousands of visitors. Organized by the Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg, its mission is to foster cross-cultural understanding, preserve heritage, and celebrate diversity.
Over the years, Folklorama has become a source of pride and a major tourism draw for Winnipeg, supporting local cultural groups and welcoming both newcomers and longtime residents. Through food, music, and storytelling, it’s a living festival that embodies Winnipeg’s multicultural spirit.
Participant Voices
“It was my first time coming from another province. At the Egyptian Pavilion, I chatted with the chef about the history of the dishes-the flavors, music, and costumes were all so exciting. It truly felt like a festival where the world comes together.”
