Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival
A Celebration of Traditional Dance and Community on the Land of Queensland
2026/07/09 - 2026/07/13
Every July, the small town of Laura in northern Queensland becomes the stage for the Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival, where ancient dances and contemporary pride intersect in a truly special gathering. Aboriginal communities from across Cape York come together, offering visitors a chance to experience the heart and soul of Indigenous Australian culture. For those who want to witness powerful dance, Dreamtime stories, and the living breath of culture, Laura is a destination worth the journey.
Ochre body paint swirling, the sound of feet pounding red earth, the resonance of the didgeridoo, and the aroma of bush tucker cooking over open fires… The warmth of the community and pride in tradition are present in every handshake, song, and shared meal.

Costumes and Decorations

Cultural and Historical Background
The Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival traces its origins to the late 1970s, when Aboriginal communities in northern Queensland wanted to create a space for passing on their cultural and dance traditions to younger generations. At the time, government assimilation policies and urbanization were threatening the survival of traditional dances, languages, and storytelling. Concerned elders invited clans and communities to Laura to share dances, ceremonies, and stories, marking the festival’s beginning.
Laura has long been an important Aboriginal meeting and trading place, surrounded by ancient rock art sites and sacred lands. The festival is deeply tied to the spirituality of this land, evolving into a “living cultural heritage” where ancestral wisdom, connection to country, and community pride are reaffirmed.
Since the 1980s, the festival has grown in scale, attracting participants from across Cape York and Australia. Its role as a “place of cultural transmission,” where elders directly teach youth, has become even stronger. The festival is also valued as a space for reconciliation and exchange, where non-Indigenous visitors can experience the depth and diversity of Aboriginal culture.
Today, the Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival is a major event drawing thousands, featuring a wide range of programs—traditional dance, music, art, storytelling, bush tucker experiences—that continue to share the strength, creativity, and spirit of Australia’s Indigenous peoples with the world.
