Tulip Time Festival
“Another Holland” Blooming in Michigan
2026/05/01 - 2026/05/09
Every spring, the city of Holland, Michigan is transformed into a vibrant sea of flowers during the Tulip Time Festival. For eight days in May, millions of tulips sway in the breeze, coloring the streets, parks, and gardens. The sweet fragrance of flowers, the sound of laughter and music, and the rhythmic clatter of wooden shoes on brick roads let you feel the arrival of spring with all your senses. It’s a heartwarming spring celebration, perfect not only for flower lovers but also for families and anyone eager to experience Dutch culture in the Midwest.
The festival is held throughout Holland every year from early to mid-May, attracting over 500,000 visitors annually. The vivid flowers, lively parades, authentic Dutch cuisine, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere are what make this event so special.
Main Attractions
Tulip Gardens
The centerpiece of the festival is the more than six million tulips planted throughout the city. Whether you stroll through Windmill Island Gardens, Centennial Park, or Tulip Lanes, you’ll find red, yellow, pink, and purple blooms creating a rainbow everywhere you go. The gentle rustle of petals in the wind and the brilliant colors are a delight for photographers and families alike.
Key Events
Signature events include the Volksparade (People’s Parade), Kinderparade (Children’s Parade), and Muziekparade (Music Parade), where hundreds of participants in traditional costumes, marching bands, and floats parade through the city. There are also Dutch dance performances in wooden shoes, artisan markets, carnivals, fireworks, and live music. The “street scrubbing” tradition before the parades, where locals in costume “clean” the streets, is a popular event that recreates Dutch customs.
Costumes and Decorations
Participants and performers wear authentic Dutch attire—lace caps, embroidered dresses, striped aprons, and of course, wooden clogs. The city is decorated with banners, windmills, and tulip-themed ornaments, and shop fronts display Delftware and Dutch goods. Parade floats are lavishly adorned with fresh flowers and colorful decorations.
Traditional Food & Drink
Festival food stalls serve poffertjes (mini pancakes dusted with powdered sugar), stroopwafels (caramel-filled waffle cookies), Dutch-style pea soup, and bratwurst. The aroma of freshly baked bread, cinnamon rolls, roasted almonds, and the sweet scent of tulips fill the air. Local breweries and cafes offer Dutch-style beer and coffee—the perfect treat as you admire the blooms.
Cultural and Historical Background
The Tulip Time Festival began in 1929 to celebrate the city’s Dutch immigrant roots and beautify the town. What started as a small community event has grown into one of the largest tulip festivals in the United States, drawing visitors from around the world. For locals, Tulip Time is a cherished tradition—a time to honor their ancestors, show hospitality, and welcome the arrival of spring.
It’s not just about the flowers—every detail, from costumes and cuisine to the town’s atmosphere, is infused with Dutch pride and history, making this the most dazzling week of the year in Holland.
Participant Voices
We came from Chicago for the first time and were overwhelmed by the colors in the gardens. We took lots of photos, tried stroopwafels for the first time, and everyone we met was so friendly. The Dutch dancing was fantastic!
